Adult education colloquium

Since 1997, the Slovenian Institute for Adult Education has been organising regular professional meetings at the national level - under the umbrella of LLW - in order to bring together domestic (and sometimes also foreign) experts, i.e. researchers, theoreticians, practitioners and policy makers, in an exchange of viewpoints concerning topical issues in the field of adult education and lifelong learning. These annual meetings were given the name Adult Education Colloquium (AEC).

The thirteenth AEC (LLW 2009) was dedicated to the theme Education of older adults in the European year of creativity and innovation. On 20 May around 80 professionals from various fields met in Ljubljana to discuss the present situation, get acquainted with examples of good practice and define future steps in the area regarded as one of the priorities of the Action plan on adult learning: It is always a good time to learn.

The twelfth AEC (LLW 2008) featured the theme of E-learning for adults - the-state-of-art and challenges. The theme is linked to the umbrella document Strategy on the Development of the Information Society in Slovenia (si2010) as well as to official initiatives of the European Union such as the E-Learning Action Plan, i2010, E-Europe + in E-Europe 2005 - An information society for all. The Colloquium took place in June 2008 in Bled and brought together nearly 80 participants.

The topic of the eleventh AEC (LLW 2007) - Action Plan on Adult Learning - validation of non-formal and informal learning and the educational system - stemmed from one of the five key messages of the Communication from the Commission Adult Learning: It is never too late to learn COM (2006) 614 final, and the Action Plan on Adult Learning: It is always a good time to learn, COM (2007) 558 final. Plenary contributions and discussion points illuminated the topic of validating non-formal and informal learning from the viewpoints of theory, practice and policy. Presentations are available in Slovenian language.

The tenth AEC (LLW 2006) provided grounds for the discussion on Adult participation: incentives and obstacles. Around 90 domestic experts, practitioners and students focused on issues such as (a) participation of the adult population in lifelong learning, (b) professional opinions, and (c) governmental measures in support of increasing the participation in lifelong learning. The compilation of abstracts is available in Slovenian language.

The ninth AEC (LLW 2005) dealt with the topic of Lifelong learning for active citizenship. Domestic and foreign experts discussed concepts and strategies of effective learning for active citizenship and social inclusion (at national as well as at local level), necessary knowledge, skills and competences, and efficient approaches to the promotion of the relation between active citizenship and lifelong learning. Plenary articles, abstracts and presentations are available in Slovenian language.

The eighth AEC (LLW 2004) focused on Education and Training of Teachers in Adult Education. Participants - one quarter of them foreign experts - discussed the topic of professional development and training of adult educators as well as their impact on the quality and efficiency of adult education and learning. Contributions were published in English language.

The seventh AEC (LLW 2003) dealt with the topic of Current issues in adult learning and motivation. Participants focused on two important aspects of adult education: (a) characteristics of adult learning and (b) the nature of motivation for learning. Foreign and domestic experts presented theoretical and practical examples and exchanged opinions with participants on various approaches and views on motivation in adult education. Proceedings were published in Current Issues in Adult Learning and Motivation (English).

The sixth AEC (LLW 2002) featured the theme Motivation in adult education. Domestic and international speakers presented their views on the factors that enhance or impede readiness of adults to participate in education and engage in learning activities.

During LLW 2001 the fifth AEC (LLW 2001) was launched, considering the theme Adult education and the changing nature of work. Colloquium participants dealt with two main issues: (a) the possibilities of implementing the concept "learning organisation" regarding the gap between the educated and non-educated adults and (b) the impact of a more active approach to human resource development on the relations of power between employees, management and shareholders.

The fourth AEC was organised in LLW 2000, for the first time having an international scope. Based on the results of the International Adult Literacy Survey (OECD, Statistics Canada, 1998-2000), Literacy, participation and knowledge society were discussed. The aim of the discussions was to identify the developmental lag of Slovenia in the field of educational attainment and literacy of the adult population in comparison with developed European and some Central European countries. Proceedings Pismenost, participacija in družba znanja (Slovenian) contain plenary articles and discussion points.

The third AEC (LLW 1999) was devoted to the question of adult education for active citizenship. It was named Adult education for active citizenship - necessity or utopia? The aim of the Colloquium was to find answers to questions such as: what does active citizenship mean, what knowledge is required for it, what is the relationship between education and active citizenship, etc. Contributions by adult educators, sociologists, psychologists and others were published in a special issue of the magazine Andragoška spoznanja, štev. 4/1999 (Slovenian).

The second AEC (LLW 1998) was organised on the topic Adult education - a factor of social inclusion with the subtitle A critical theory of adult education. Given the example of the phenomenon of exclusion of certain social groups (young adults, the elderly, those with lower levels of education, etc.), experts in various fields discussed whether education in general (and adult education in particular) reinforces existing inequalities or whether it can transcend them. Proceedings bearing the title Adult education, inequality and social inclusion were published within the series Studies and research 8 (Slovenian).

The first AEC (LLW 1997) - a round table discussion by relevant professionals on the topic Lifelong education versus lifelong learning was initiated by SIAE. This was an opportunity for the exchange of mixed opinions concerning the 'paradigm shift from education to learning', with special emphasis placed on the use of both notions among professionals, educators, learners and others in Slovenia. The 1998 publication Vseživljenjsko izobraževanje, vseživljenjsko učenje (Slovenian) comprises plenary presentations and several discussion points that had been raised in the colloquium.
