Regional organisation SFTUA (Slovenian Free Trade Unions Association) Podravje from Maribor

In present times when the world is a precarious and uncertain place marked in all possible domains by the multitude of changes, the solidarity of social allies, what the unions were traditionally meant to be, does not suffice anymore; access to information has become an indispensably required tool as well. The true power is hidden in the awaken awareness and knowledge, since the rights and liberties are assured to us only if we know them well and if we also enforce them. At the regional organisation of SFTUA (Slovenian Free Trade Unions Association) Podravje they are quite conscious of that. For the needs of their own members - besides seminars, consultations, legal assistance and publishing of various leaflets, brochures and other publications on different topics they also developed the network of study circles. By means of them they ensure the constant improvement of employees in their regional office, trade union organisers, members of councils and several mentors. Up to now they have managed to cover no less than 13 topics and domains. Among them are issues such as the shared or co-management in companies, how to become a successful trade union organiser, how to resolve the conflicts within companies, what are the tasks of unions prior to Slovenia's entrance into EU ... In the last two years we may thus come across titles such as Rights of the Labour Invalids, Labour Relationship in New Circumstances, Free Transfer of the Work Force, Employment of Foreigners and Daily Migrants and Ways out of Unemployment. More than 100 union organisers and members of worker councils were trained within these circles. The fruits of their labour are interesting topical brochures and manuals, a videocassette, consultations, round tables and other forms of public clarifications of the current issues. Such an involvement of study circles into the wider social environment has contributed both to the broadening of new findings and ideas as well as to the growth of the culture of learning and popularisation of study circles as a form of acquiring and transferring knowledge.
