Awards to individuals for outstanding achievements in lifelong learning

Darja Smrkolj from Zagorje ob Savi

This pensioner from Zagorje ob Savi has participated in over 500 hours of learning in the last 5 years, despite the prejudices she has been fighting all her life.
Because of her dwarfism, Darja has dealt with prejudices her whole life, which made her fear being among people. She was enrolled into the first workshop by a friend, as she did not have the courage, but in the following five years she participated in more than 500 hours of free non-formal and informal learning. She started with computer science and continued with foreign languages, English, German and Russian. She is active in local associations and a regular visitor at the library, and volunteers as a reader in the Izlake retirement home.

DARJA SMRKOLJ received the ACS 2017 AWARD “as living proof that learning improves lives”.
