Goriška statistical region lies at the far west of Slovenia along the border with Italy. The Julian Alps,
the Soča River and the fertile Vipava valley are the most prominent natural features of this region. As life expectancy is the highest in Slovenia, the share of people aged 65 or more is also the highest. According to the enrolment in tertiary programs among persons in the age group 19-26 years Goriška was in 2011 first in the country with two thirds of persons aged 19-26 being students.

| The municipality Ajdovščina, the business and culture centre of the Vipava valley, is surrounded by the Trnovo, the Nanos and the Hrušica plateaus. It is marked by the local wind called Burja and a special climate, influenced by the Mediterranean. Municipality Ajdovščina, which is part of the Goriška statistical region, measures 245 km2; this ranks it 18th among Slovene municipalities. The number of people in the municipality ranks Ajdovščina 20th among Slovene municipalities. The number of live births was in 2012 higher than the number of deaths. The number of people who moved from the municipality was higher than the number of people who moved into the municipality. In contrast to most Slovene municipalities, in Ajdovščina the number of old people was almost the same as the number of young people. |
