The Goriška region lies at the far west of Slovenia along the border with Italy. The Julian Alps, the Soča River and the fertile Vipava valley are the most prominent natural features of this region. As life expectancy is the highest in Slovenia, the share of people aged 65 or more is also the highest. According to the enrolment in tertiary programs among persons in the age group 19-26 years Goriška was in 2011 first in the country with two thirds of persons aged 19-26 being students. The urban municipality Nova Gorica is situated at the west of Slovenia and borders Italy. Settlement Nova Gorica is the business, cultural and administrative centre of the municipality and the wider region.
