LLW coordinators are institutions which initiate, guide and coordinate the collaboration of LLW providers at the local level. They either act in their town, municipality or even in their region (so called regional coordinators) or in their thematic field (thematic coordinators).

In the year 2001, the network of LLW coordinators was formalized and established; since then their involvement has been steered by Recommendations for LLW Coordination (Slovenian language only). This document was actually the starting point for the Manual for Lifelong Learning Week / Learning Festival (LLW/LF) Co-ordination produced in the LLW-Grundtvig project entitled Widening and strengthening the European dimension of the LLW movement.

Traditionally, the role of LLW Coordinator has been taken up by larger educational and other institutions. The scope of their coordinating role has varied greatly - in some areas LLW coordinators animate other institutions to take part in the Week and send them necessary information whereas all further activities are taken care of by LLW providers themselves. On the other hand, in some areas, coordinators actually harmonise the contents and the timing of LLW events. In many cases, coordinators take care of joint media and visual promotion of LLW events. All kinds of a joint approach to LLW have been recognized as beneficial: due to the LLW coordinators' role, the number and diversity of providers has increased, the quality and variety of events has grown as well, so did the responsiveness of media and the widest public. Long-lasting partnerships have been established (among educational and non-educational institutions, groups and individuals) and the cooperation of ‘small' LLW providers has been made possible.
